BEIRUT: Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea Thursday called for the election of new officials in order to reform the Lebanese political system.
“We need an actual and serious social revolution that changes the political practices of citizens and delivers new politicians,” Samir Geagea told visitors to the Lebanese Forces compound in Maarab.
He deemed the “revolution” as the only solution to “rectify the course of developments in the country.”
“If people are seeking change, then they (must) change their choices; the solution lies in their hands,” the LF leader added.
He called for a “great revolution against corruption,” expressing the belief that his party is the only side capable of conducting such a matter because “it is not submerged in the accumulating corruption.”
“We are honest with ourselves and for this reason we didn’t take part in (Prime Minister Tammam Salam’s) Cabinet since we believed that it would lead us nowhere.”
Lebanon has been witnessing an increasing number of protests by civil society groups since July, which mushroomed after a severe garbage crisis hit the country this summer. Each group has called for different reforms, but eliminating corruption remains a central demand to all.
Samir Geagea reiterated his calls on lawmakers to attend the presidential election session and elect a new head of state “as soon as possible.”
“The core problem is the obstruction of presidential elections,” the LF chief said, explaining that Iran-backed Hezbollah are the main reason behind it.
Lebanon has been without a president since the term of former President Michel Sleiman ended in May 2014.
